An Extension of Zermelo’s Model for Ranking by Paired Comparisons

چکیده

In 1929, Zermelo proposed a probabilistic model for ranking by paired comparisons and showed that this model produces a unique ranking of the objects under consideration when the outcome matrix is irreducible. When the matrix is reducible, the model may yield only a partial ordering of the objects. In this paper, we analyze a natural extension of Zermelo’s model resulting from a singular perturbation. We show that this extension produces a ranking for arbitrary (nonnegative) outcome matrices and retains several of the desirable properties of the original model. In addition, we discuss computational techniques and provide examples of their use.

On Thurstone's Model for Paired Comparisons and Ranking Data

We investigate by means of a simulation study whether standard structural equation modeling techniques are suitable for estimating an unrestricted Thurstonian model to: (a) multiple judgment paired comparisons data, and (b) ranking data. We point out that Thurstone's (1927) original model is not a proper model for multiple judgment paired comparisons data as it assigns zero probability to all i...

Inconsistency in the ordinal pairwise comparisons method with and without ties

Comparing alternatives in pairs is a well-known method of ranking creation. Experts are asked to perform a series of binary comparisons and then, using mathematical methods, the final ranking is prepared. As experts conduct the individual assessments, they may not always be consistent. The level of inconsistency among individual assessments is widely accepted as a measure of the ranking quality...

Introductory note to 1928

Zermelo’s 1928 paper on measuring participants’ playing strengths in chess tournaments is a remarkable work in the history of paired comparison modeling. Apart from several contemporary papers by Thurstone (1927a, 1927b, 1927c), Zermelo’s paper was an isolated excursion into paired comparison methods that was far ahead of its time. After this paper, the field remained mostly dormant for about 2...

An impossibility theorem for paired comparisons

In several decision-making problems, alternatives should be ranked on the basis of paired comparisons between them. We present an axiomatic approach for the universal ranking problem with arbitrary preference intensities, incomplete and multiple comparisons. In particular, two basic properties – independence of irrelevant matches and self-consistency – are considered. It is revealed that there ...

λZ: Zermelo’s Set Theory as a PTS with 4 Sorts

We introduce a pure type system (PTS) λZ with four sorts and show that this PTS captures the proof-theoretic strength of Zermelo’s set theory. For that, we show that the embedding of the language of set theory into λZ via the ‘sets as pointed graphs’ translation makes λZ a conservative extension of IZ + AFA + TC (intuitionistic Zermelo’s set theory plus Aczel’s antifoundation axiom plus the axi...
